AKC Limited Registration
ALL DOGS WITH LIMITED REGISTRATION CAN COMPETE IN ALL AKC/UKC FIELD EVENTS
Limited Registration
Limited registration means the dog is registered but no litter produced by that dog are eligible for registration. The dog can complete in every AKC event, including obedience, tracking, field trials, hunt tests, and agility, except for breeding competition, at a licensed or member event. It is sort of an insurance to the breeder.
Why would a breeder specify a limited registration for a puppy?
Simply put, to protect the puppy and try to prevent genetic problems in our breed.
Puppy mills will often buy puppies with the intent of breeding them as soon as possible. Some owners of puppy mills will even hire young couples to pose as puppy buyers in order to get past screening by breeders, then the puppy is transferred to the puppy mill. In order to keep costs down they will breed them early and often.
They WON'T test for genetic problems.
They DON'T screen their buyers (except to make sure the buyer has sufficient cash available).
They WILL take few if any precautions to prevent disease in their dogs.
We sell our puppies on limited registration to make them less appealing to puppy mills- a puppy whose offspring can’t be registered isn’t as valuable to them.
What if later I decide I’d like to breed the dog?
Limited registration is reversible.
If the puppy grows up to be potential breeding stock that would improve the bloodlines of the breed, the breeder can submit a form to the American Kennel Club to have the limitation reversed.
SOUTHERN FIELD RETRIEVER’S minimum requirements to have limited registration reversed:
(a) The puppy needs to be microchipped and the chip number on the certification.
(b) The puppy’s eyes are cleared of genetic problems by board certified ophthalmologist
(c) The puppy is a minimum of 26 months of age, the puppy’s hips and elbows are certified clear of canine hip and elbows dysplasia by the OFA
(d) The puppy is tested and found clear of Exercise Induced Collapse (EIC) If found to be a carrier of EIC will not be bred to another carrier.
(e) The puppy is found clear of the D Locus
(f) A $500.00 fee must be paid to the breeder before the release of full registration. This fee is to cover AKC and Breeder reversal limited registration fees and to protect the blood line. NO EXCEPTIONS!! It is our opinion that a dog that doesn’t pass these basic health checks should not be bred!
Integrity of bloodline: the seller is demonstrating concern for the integrity and future of their bloodlines and reputation of the seller's kennel name, the health of the dog, a commitment to preserving excellence within the breed. Buyer shall not change dog's AKC registered name by registering with any registry that allows this. Buyer must use the prefix (Southernfields) on any and all registration.
